Tonekabon city, also known as Shahsavar, is located in Mazandaran Province in north of Iran. From west, Tonekabon is connected to Ramsar city, from east it is connected to Chaloos city, from south side it is connected to Alborz mountains and from north, is ends to Caspian Sea. City capital is called Tonekabon. People of Tonekabon speak in Farsi, Mazani, and Gilaki languages.
Tonekabon is the fifth biggest city of Mazandaran Province, being the first populated city in western Mazandaran. City is expanded in an area of 2140 kilometers. Tonekabon is the capital for kiwifruit, orange and tea harvesting. It is also the major city in producing and cultivating a vast range of flowers and decorative plants. Having a great number of fish breeding farms which are located in Shirood, Do Hezar, etc. is now the biggest city in Iran activated in fish breeding industry and is the central point for cold water fish researches in the country.
Tonekabon is the specific governorate zone. According to the last census population of the city is equal to 45,338 persons. Once the population was estimated as 153,940 persons. Back in times, Khorram Abad was the central town of Tonekabon and during Qajar era, Mahal Salas was the central town when the city was ruled by Khal`atbari family. When Pahlavi dynasty started, the newly constructed site of the city was considered as the central town. With Islamic Revolution, Shahsavar was renamed to Tonekabon. During Safavid dynasty Tonekabon was known as “Feiz”. When Tonekabon was attached to Deylamestan, it was then called "Deylam Khasse". Before that, city was named as “Toneka”. At present days, this city is mainly known as “Shahsavar” among people.
